While Europeans were sailing close to the coastlines of continents before developing navigational instruments that would allow them to venture onto the open ocean, voyagers from Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa began to settle islands in an ocean area of over 10 million square miles. By controlling the trade routes and the resources in the new lands, they might gain great wealth. A lesser-known Chinese official named Wan-Hu introduced rockets as a means of transportation. An article in the September 2005 Newsletter of Australian National Placenames Survey states that "The Pennefather River --located at 12º 14’ South and 141º 43’ East on western Cape York Peninsula, Queensland--is one of the most significant historical sites in Australia.

With the decline of the Roman Empire and the coming of Christianity we get a new spirit inspiring our mediæval maps, in which Jerusalem, hitherto totally obscure, dominates the whole situation. Rounding the point, afterwards named by Davis Cape Farewell, and sailing by the western coast of Greenland, they hoped to find the passage to Cathay. I gathered all the information that I could find to help with the image. A complete set of Dalrymple’s maps and charts published up to 1788 sold for £302,500, and a copy of Matthew Flinders’s Observations on the coasts of Van Diemen’s Land (1801), bound with the 3 charts, sold for £290,500.

Along the coast sailed the Spaniards to a place called by the Indians Quimpeche, now known as Campechy Bay. Crew: Paul Weitz, Karol Bobko, Donald Peterson, and Story Musgrave. The long struggle of five months was over; they could sail home now along the shores of the Black Sea. On 22 August 1770, he claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia at Possession Island, naming eastern Australia New South Wales. "Notwithstanding[ing] I had in the Name of His Majesty taken possession of several places upon this coast, I now once more hoisted English Coulers and in the Name of His Majesty King George the Third took possession of the whole Eastern Coast ... by the name New South Wales, together with all the Bays, Harbours Rivers and Islands situate upon the said coast, after which we fired three Volleys of small Arms which were Answerd by the like number from the Ship."
