Unfortunately many early years settings succumb to pressure and push children towards academic goals and objectives, sometimes almost obsessively. Applications open in July and are due four weeks prior to commencement of the programme. The nationally prescribed curriculum includes language, math, art, music, physical education and general knowledge, which is a combination of science and social studies (Spodek, 1988). These include NAEYC’s standards for professional preparation (NAEYC, 2001), relied on “very much” by about 77% of both associate and baccalaureate programs; and NAEYC’s standards for programs for young children (NAEYC, 2005), relied on “very much” by 76% of associate degree programs and 72% of baccalaureate programs.
