It is an attractive city with many old colonial style buildings. Almost 7km in altitude it can be walked al the way to the summit via the normal route without needing crampons. Butterflies the size of birds, brightly coloured Makaws, comical Tucans and an array of cheeky monkeys frequent the tree tops, whilst Anacondas, Coatis, Capybara and Jaguars are among the lowland neighbours. In recent years the government has promoted the re-establishment of long distance passenger trains, although most lines still operate at a low frequency (one or two departures weekly).
